Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Manager
problem-solving:
When playing back a wave file, the volume is different
than on the CD:
Question: If I play a CD in the CD-ROM (Button: "Play" in the CD table of
contents), it is played back at a different volume that if I copy a track onto
the harddisk and then play the wave file. Why?
Answer: If an audio CD is played in the CD-ROM, then the CD-ROM handles translation
of the (digital) music data into analog current values; the data (which is already
translated) is then transmitted to the soundcard via a cable and simply mixed
with the output signal.
If in contrast a wave file is played, the audio data from Feurio!® is sent
digitally to the sound card via the computer bus and translated into analog data
there.
As the translators in the CD-ROM and in the soundcard are not identical, the
data of course can be heard at a different volume (and possibly in different
quality).
Apart from that, most soundcards provide an integrated "Mixer", which makes it
possible to regulate the individual tone sources; you can therefore use this
to regulate the volume from the CD-ROM and Wave playback (maybe they were set
at different values?).
The exact way in which this works depends on your soundcard. Please have a look
in the instructions for your soundcard!
For Soundblaster cards e.g. you have to double-click on the loudspeaker icon
in the system tray and then a dialog box: "Play Control" will appear. In this
box you will find various controls which regulate the volume of the individual
audio sources.
"Play Control" control the overall volume, "Wave" the volume of the wave playback
and "CD Audio" the volume of the CD playback.
So you have to adjust the controls "Wave" and "CD-Audio" to suit each other to
get an equal volume playback of CD-Audio and Wave data!
