Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Manager
problem-solving:
I have got interference noise in the data read?
Question: I read audio tracks with the Feurio!® CD-Manager but if I play
back the tracks read in the Feurio!® CD-Manager, I can hear interference
noise - why is this? How do I get rid of it?
Answer: There are 3 different cases to be defined here:- Defective CD
Often it is simply that the source CD is defective (e.g. scratches) - test and
see if the interference noise appears on other CDs.
NOTE: The error correction on different CD-ROMS is not always equally good -
we have seen cases where one CD-ROM really only read "rubbish" and another CD-ROM
was able to read the same CD perfectly - if necessary try and read it with another
CD-ROM!
- CD-ROM, which can not read audio correctly:
Unfortunately many CD-ROMs are not capable of reading audio-data correctly.
In the Feurio!® CD-Manager under "Program" -> "Program-Parameters", call
up the function "Test Device". If the device test determines that the drive does
not read audio data correctly, there is not much you can do (except use another
CD-ROM). In individual cases changing the parameters (e.g. activating "Jitter-correction")
can improve the read quality - 100% correct read-out is however not possible
with such a CD-ROM!
CAUTION: The device test of course does not provide any absolute statements
- even the device test can't find all faults in the drive. In principle the device
test works by reading a section of a CD several times and the data is then compared
respectively. If a device always provides the same incorrect data, then the device
test will not find a fault.
On this, look on the Feurio!® Homepage (http://www.feurio.de). Under "Supported
CD-ROMs" you will often be able to tell if a CD-Rom can read audio correctly
or not.
- Problems with replay:
In individual cases we have seen that the data has been read correctly and it
is just the replay via the soundcard which is not working correctly. In particular
when trying to use "old" Windows 98 drivers under Windows 2000, this effect sometimes
occurs.
If the interference noise always appears at different places however and ONLY
when being played in the Feurio!® Wave-Player/Trackeditor, but NOT on a burned
CD, then the fault can be found on the soundcard or the soundcard driver.
Please check and see if there is an update for your soundcard and/or contact
the soundcard vendor's Support.
COMMENT:
Another possible source for playback errors can be an extremely high system load
and in particular other time-critical processes (e.g. scanning, Soft-Modem etc.).
If the Wave-Player or the soundcard driver does not get enough computer time
to prepare the data, then interference noises can occur.
During "normal" operation interference noise should not occur due to the higher
process priority of the wave player - if, however, other time-critical processes
are started, it can of course happen that they "steal" the necessary computer
time from the Feurio! Wave-Player and/or the soundcard driver.
In particular drivers for "Parallel port scanners" often have the habit of blocking
the system to such an extent that playback errors occur.
