Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Writer
problem solving:
I have problems with 80 minute CD-Rs
Question: I would like to use Feurio!® to write 80 minute CD-Rs but unfortunately
it doesn't work. When I try to burn an 80 minute CD, I get an error message.
Answer: In principle this is not a problem with Feurio!®, but a problem
with the hardware:
80 minute CD-Rs are actually "illegal". According to the Red-Book (the standard
for CDs), a CD has got a maximum of 74 minutes.
The 80 minute CD-Rs are created by "stretching" the specification:
Every CD has got a track on which the data is written (the same as a record).
The distance between the track and the maximum start and end position are defined
precisely. Thus there are normally a good 74 minutes available. The distance
between the tracks is given with a certain tolerance value. This tolerance value
is normally used to balance out inaccuracies in the optics or on the CD.
If the tolerance value is always used right up to its limit, i.e. the track packed
as tightly as possible, an 80 minute CD-R is the result.
As there is no "safety reserve" available any more, the smallest deviation on
the CD or in the optics of the writer inevitably leads to an error.
So in particular with 80 minute CDs, the manufacturer plays an even more important
role than with "normal" CDs: So small deviations in the track with "normal" 74
minute CDs are no problem (they are of course "absorbed" by the tolerances),
with 80 minute CDs they mean disaster.
So there are several manufacturers of CD writers, which take the point of view:
"80 minute CDs are not correct CDs, so we do not support them on principle".
With a writer of this kind, NO 80 minute CDs can be written.
But even if the writer supports 80 minute CDs , this can sometimes cause errors
due to the above mentioned reasons. Unfortunately in this case it only helps
to try different manufacturers.
Question: I can successfully burn an 80 minute CD, but if I try to play it
either I get interference noise or my player doesn't accept it all
Answer: As explained in the above answer, 80 minute CD-Rs are based on using
all tolerance limits given in the standard - so they really "aren't quite legal".
Unfortunately this has the consequence that some players can not play back the
80 minute CD-Rs correctly because as mentioned, all tolerances have been uses
and so the smallest fault on the CD or the smallest deviation in the optics of
the CD player already mean exceeding the tolerances.
This is really not Feurio!®'s fault. For Feurio!® it doesn't matter whether
a CD-R is 74 or 80 minutes long - the burning process is 100% identical.
It may help to use other 80 minute CD-Rs or to select another write speed.
