Feurio FAQ - Feurio! Trackeditor:
Recording more than 3 hours, 22 minutes?
Question: I want to use Feurio! as a digital "recorder" and e. g. record a
radio show with more than 3 hours, 22 minutes. No matter how much hard disk space
is available - Feurio! always shows "202 minutes, 52 seconds (i. e. 3 hours,
22 minutes) as the maximum recording time. Is this a bug of Feurio?
Answer: No. This time limit is caused by restrictions of the wave format.
The wave format prescribes a header, that contains (among other things) the file
length as a 32-bit number. With 32 bit you can only describe numbers from - 2147483648
to + 2147483647 - so the maximum length of a wave file is limited to 2147483647
bytes - and this are only 3 hours, 22 minutes at CD quality (44,1 khz, 16 bit,
stereo, i. e. 176400 bytes / second. 2147483647 / 176400 = 12173 seconds = 202
minutes).
Note: Theoretically the wave format can handle files up to 4,2 GB, if the
file length value is handled as an unsigned number (i. e. the area from 0 to
429496729; but we have noticed, that the treatment of this value is not properly
implemented in many programs, causing severe program errors. Therefore we have
limited the length to 2,1 GB.
Note 2: We are oftenly asked, why we do not define a format, that allows recording
more than 2 GB:
We could easily do so - but we would violate the universally applicable standards
then. We want to use standard file formats as long as possible, to ensure a wide
interchangeability of the files.
It would be Microsoft's job to define an extended wave format!
Note 3: When unsign the mp3-Format, you can record more the 3 hours, 22 minutes
- with the mp3-format, you can record nearly infinite!
