Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Writer
problem-solving:
I've got interfering noise on the burned CD!
Question: I've got interfering noise on the burned CD! What has caused this?
How do I avoid it happening in future?
Answer: There are various causes for interfering noise:- Problems READING
the data
The noises are often already "created" when reading the audio data
- Problems while BURNING the data
Problems can also occur during burning.
- Problems while PLAYING the data
However it is also possible that this interfering noise is not there until created
in the playback device.
To solve the problem, you first of all have to find the cause. The procedure
depends on the action you have carried out.- "on-the-fly
copy" copy:
An "on-the-fly copy" makes heavy demands
on the CD-ROM, as an "on-the-fly copy"
is not read out continuously but always "a piece at a time"- many "cheap" CD-ROMs
are not up to this.
Test and see if the interfering noise also appears with an "Image
copy". If so, then proceed as explained under .
If not, then you have already found the cause - your CD-ROM is not capable of
providing correct audio data with the higher requirements made by an "on-the-fly
copy".
In this case we can unfortunately only advise you to either use a different CD-ROM
- or to do without "on-the-fly copies"
and to just use "Image copies". (You could
possible try to optimize the read parameters under "Program parameters" in the
Feurio! CD-Manager - as a general rule this won't do any good - the vendor would
have to improve the CD-ROM).
- "Image copy":
Here the cause is often also problems reading the data.
After burning the CD, on being asked "Image copy ended, delete image file" do
NOT click on "Yes". In the Feurio! CD-Manager you will now find a new project,
the image of the CD is saved in this project. Now play this project with the
Feurio! Wave-Player - if there are already noises in this project, then the problem
is with reading the data - on this see: "Interfering
noise in the data read".
If the data is correct, see below.
- Burning a project:
Check whether the interfering noise already exists in the project!
Now play this project with the Feurio! Wave-Player - if there are already noises
in this project, then the problem is with reading the data - on this, see: "Interfering
noise in the data read".
If the data is correct, see below.
The source data is correct, now what?
Using the instructions above I have confirmed that the source data is correct
- so the interfering noise must be created while burning or playing. Now what?
- Have you used CD-RWs?
Due to their poor optical properties CD-RWs can only be played back properly
by a few CD players. Test and see if the interfering noise also appears if you
burn the data on a "normal" CD-R. If in this case the interfering noise does
not appear, then the problem is definitely caused by the CD-RW. It might help
to test the CD-RWs made by another vendor.
- Does the interfering noise occur on ALL CD players (including the CD-ROM)?
Test and see if the interfering noise appears on ALL CD players (including the
computer CD-ROM). If the interfering noise only appears on SOME CD players, then
the CD has basically been burned correctly. However, CD-Rs do not have 100% the
same optical properties as pressed CDs - thus making heavier demands on the optics
of the CD player, i.e. it is possible that the CD is no longer optimally adjusted
so that it just manages to play "normal" CDs but can't cope with CD-Rs.
But the type of CD-R and the write speed also play an important role!
It is very possible that the problem does not occur with other CD-Rs or other
write speeds (on this, see: "Which CD-Rs should I use?")
- experiment a bit!
If the same errors always occur with different CD-Rs, you can assume that the
player is no longer working 100% correctly.
- Have you ever tried other CD-Rs?
"Cheap CD-Rs" in particular are sometimes very poor quality - they sometimes
already have faults in the coating - in this case it's no wonder there is interfering
noise. Test brand-name CD-Rs! (on this, see: "What CD-Rs
should I use?").
NOTE: You really MUST TRY different makes of CD-R - it is quite possible that
your burner can't cope with the CD-Rs used. (The burners are sometimes optimized
for certain makes of CD-R). Get information from the vendor of the burner and
see which CD-Rs he recommends!
- Have you tried different write speeds?
The write speed also makes a difference. Unfortunately it is not possible to
make a general recommendation here either - it always depends on the combination
: burner - CD-R - player. Here again the only thing you can do is TRY IT OUT.
- Other driver?
In particular in the case of "rhythmic" interference (e.g. every 1/10 second
a noise pulse) the cause is probably another separate driver or another program
which accesses the writer during burning - and e.g. sends a block of data to
the writer every 1/10 seconds - which can then of course be heard as a noise.
In the Feurio! CD-Writer under "Extras" call up the entry "Carry out system diagnosis"
and ensure that there are no drivers recognized as being "problematic" in the
system any more. To be completely sure, you can install a "clean" Windows in
a 2 partition.
- Current Firmware Version?
There have already been cases where the error could be found in faulty Firmware
of the writer - the writer just didn't burn CDs correctly! (In the cases which
were brought to our attention, we of course built in a warning message in Feurio!.)
Look on the vendor's Homepage or contact the vendor's Support and ask for a new
firmware version!
Look on the Feurio! Homepage (http://www.feurio.de) and see if there are any
new messages on your CD writer!
- Current Feurio! Version?
It is also possible that it is an error in Feurio! in connection with your writer
- test and see if you have got the current Feurio! Version installed (See: "Updates")
- maybe the error has already been corrected.
